Hundreds of thousands of
New Yorkers live below the poverty line. Of these impoverished people,
one-third live in rural communities. In rural New York, the poverty levels
are high and per capita income is low.
Some are unable to afford
decent housing. Others find that the cost of housing leaves little money
for food, heat, clothing and medical expenses. Even families with moderate
incomes find that inflation has far outstripped earning ability; that housing
costs have placed home ownership far beyond reach.
Affordable housing provides
a solution. However, it is not a simple solution: the complexities of creating
affordable housing -- regulatory, financial, design, needs assessment and
so on -- are compounded by ever-changing information.
The Rural Housing Coalition's
network of rural housing professionals work toward a common goal: to design,
develop, finance, build and manage affordable housing to meet the diverse
needs of rural New Yorkers. Members of our network share their knowledge
and expertise to forward this goal. They include government leaders and
agency staff, housing and community developers, financial planners, architects,
attorneys, regional planners, health and human services professionals,
and others. Together, these housing professionals form a unified voice
advocating for improving the quality of life in rural New York.
The Coalition has considerable
experience in :
-
nonprofit community-based organization
development & management;
-
affordable housing development,
financing and management;
-
housing resource development;
-
educational programming &
information dissemination.
